Nissin, the Original Instant Ramen
Witnessing a dire food shortage in Japan after WWII, an industrious businessman set out to produce a simple and affordable solution to feed the masses. Our founder, Momofuku Ando, was convinced that "Peace will come to the world when the people have enough to eat." After years of experimentation, in 1958, “Chikin Ramen” was officially released and sparked a 3-minute global revolution. For more than 60 years, Mr. Ando’s spirit of innovation continues to provide simple, nourishing delight to billions of people around the world.
Nissin in the US
On a trip to the U.S. in 1966, Momofuku Ando noticed Americans curiously eating forkfuls of noodles out of cups, instead of using bowls and chopsticks. With that simple observation, the worldwide Cup Noodles phenomenon was born. Shortly after, Nissin officially put down its roots in the U.S. In 1972, our Gardena, CA, plant started production of Top Ramen—the first instant ramen manufactured and sold in the U.S. And ever since, Nissin Foods USA has launched a continuous stream of new and innovative products for hungry, noodle-loving Americans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this safe for my tween to make on their own after school?
Yes. As long as the hot water is handled by an adult or older sibling, younger kids can handle the stirring, timing, and eating. There is no stove, no open flame, and no sharp tools involved.
Are there any choking hazards I should worry about for younger kids?
The noodles are soft once cooked, but for kids under 4 we recommend cutting them with kitchen scissors and making sure the broth is cool enough to sip. The visible toppings (egg, shrimp, pork) are small and fully cooked.
Is the salt level appropriate for a kid's snack or after-school meal?
The flavor is described as light and well-balanced, not aggressively salty. For very salt-sensitive children, you can use a little less of the seasoning packet and top with fresh veggies, soft egg, or cheese to mellow it out.
Can my picky eater enjoy this, or will they reject the texture?
Most kids enjoy the slurpable noodle texture, and the broth is mild enough to feel familiar even for picky eaters. The visible egg and pork pieces also make it feel more like a real meal than plain noodles.
Is this filling enough as an after-school snack before dinner?
Yes, it is portioned as a light meal and lands between a snack and a full dinner, which makes it ideal for hungry kids who need something warm between school and the family evening meal.
Is this a good thing to pack in my child's lunchbox for a hot lunch at school?
It works only if your child has access to hot water and 3 minutes to wait, such as in a microwave-equipped staff room. For most schools, it is better kept at home as an after-school meal.
Can I send this in a care package to my college-aged child?
Yes, it is one of the most popular care package items because it is shelf-stable, lightweight, microwaveable in the Original flavor, and reminds students of home. The 6-pack is a great starter size.
Will my kid actually want to eat this on a road trip?
Most kids love cup noodles on long drives because the cup is fun, the noodles are slurpable, and the hot broth feels comforting. It also keeps them occupied for the 3-minute prep window at a rest stop.
How does this compare to canned soup for a kid's quick lunch?
Cup noodles are faster (3 minutes vs. 5 to 10), require no can opener, and the broth is lighter and more kid-friendly than most canned cream soups. The trade-off is that canned soup has more vegetables and protein per serving.
Is this a healthier alternative to other instant noodles marketed to kids?
It is MSG-free, has visible real toppings (egg, shrimp, pork), and avoids some of the artificial flavoring found in cheaper brands. It is still an occasional meal rather than a daily one, but it is one of the cleaner options in the cup noodle category.
How does this compare to making real ramen from scratch for kids?
Scratch ramen takes 2 to 4 hours and adult-level skill. Cup Noodle is the realistic weeknight option for parents who want a warm, savory noodle bowl in 3 minutes without standing over a stove.
Is the cup safe if my child drops it on the floor?
The foam cup is durable enough to handle normal kid wear and tear, but if it cracks and leaks hot broth, please set it aside and start a new one. The noodles themselves stay safely inside the sealed lid until the user peels it back.
What is the age recommendation for letting my child make this alone?
Most parents are comfortable with kids 10 and up handling it independently, and kids 7 to 9 with light adult help. The main safety step is pouring the hot water, which we recommend an adult does until the child is comfortable around boiling water.
Will the broth stain my child's clothes or backpack if it spills?
It is a light soy-based broth and typically washes out of most fabrics with a quick rinse. We still recommend eating over a desk or table rather than a laptop, just to be safe.
How do I prepare Nissin Cup Noodle step by step?
Step 1: Peel back the lid halfway. Step 2: Pour boiling water up to the fill line inside the cup. Step 3: Close the lid, wait 3 minutes, stir well, and enjoy. For the Original flavor only, you can also microwave the cup with water for about 3 to 4 minutes instead of using a kettle.
Can I make this in the microwave instead of with a kettle?
Yes, but only the Original flavor is officially microwaveable. Remove the lid, add water to the fill line, microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes, and let it sit for another minute before stirring. The Seafood and Curry flavors are best prepared with boiling water only.
What is the best way to enhance the flavor?
Popular add-ins include a soft-boiled egg, sliced green onion, shredded rotisserie chicken, a dash of sriracha, a slice of American cheese, or a handful of frozen peas and corn stirred in after cooking. The mild broth is a great base for extras.
Is this cup microwave-safe in a standard 700 to 1100 watt microwave?
Yes. The foam cup is designed for microwave use in standard home and office microwaves. Use the Original flavor for the best results, and stop the microwave if the broth starts to bubble over.
Does the cup fit standard cup holders and backpack side pockets?
Yes. The cup is roughly 3.5 inches wide and 4 inches tall, which fits most car cup holders, dorm mini-fridge shelves, and the side pockets of standard backpacks.
What exactly comes in the box when I order the 6-pack?
You receive one outer cardboard carton containing six individually sealed 2.4 oz foam cups. Each cup contains the noodles, the broth seasoning, and the dehydrated toppings. You do not need to buy anything else to prepare it.
Is the formula MSG-free and safe for sensitive stomachs?
Yes, this formula is MSG-free. Many buyers with sensitive stomachs use it as an easy-to-digest meal, especially when sick. As with any seasoned food, eat in moderation and pair it with water.
What is the shelf life, and how should I store the cups?
The cups are shelf-stable for many months when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep them in the original carton, and check the date printed on the bottom of each cup for the exact best-by date.
How does cup noodle differ from regular instant ramen packets?
Cup noodle is a self-contained single serving with a built-in bowl, pre-portioned broth, and dehydrated toppings. Instant ramen packets are just the noodles and seasoning, which require your own pot, bowl, and toppings. Cup noodle is the faster, more portable option.
