Harney & Sons Fine Teas

Accepting only the exceptional, from tea garden to tea cup

In 1983, John Harney embarked on a mission to share his passion for great tea. From the first six teas we offered then, to the 300 varieties we offer today, it has been a remarkable journey.

Now, Harney's is still committed to our main purpose, providing high-quality tea that is a great value. Whether you are looking for a morning pick-me-up, a tasty mid-day treat, or a soothing cup before bed, Harney & Sons Fine Teas has the perfect blend for you.

Cheers, from our family to yours.

Product Information
The base of African Autumn, our popular herbal blend, is rooibos, a legume also known as "red bush" native to South Africa. Rooibos is oxidized, which changes the color to red, and when brewed, it looks similar to the red of "black" tea. Loaded with antioxidants, fans love the brightness of the rooibos, accented by cranberry and citrus. This is an herbal blend and contains no caffeine.

Each HT tin contains 20 tea sachets. Each sachet brews one 12 oz. cup of tea.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes pyramid sachets feel more premium than standard tea bags?

Pyramid sachets give the full tea leaves room to unfurl and bloom, which extracts a richer, more nuanced cup. They also look and feel closer to loose-leaf service, which is part of the elevated ritual.

Is the decorative tin designed to be kept and reused after the tea is gone?

Yes, customers commonly repurpose the tin for storing small items, displaying on a tea bar cart, or refilling with loose-leaf tea. The build quality and finish are intentionally keepsake-worthy.

How does the rooibos base compare to standard herbal teas in depth of flavor?

Rooibos offers a smooth, slightly sweet, full-bodied cup that stands up to more adventurous pairings like cream, lemon, or a splash of honey. African Autumn layers cranberry and citrus on top for added sophistication.

Will this impress guests when served at a dinner party or afternoon tea?

The pyramid sachets, decorative tin, and balanced flavor profile all read as upscale. Pouring the brewed tea into nice cups and leaving the tin on a tea cart makes for an elegant presentation.

Is the 20-sachet tin portioned for entertaining or for personal use?

It works for both. Daily drinkers finish the tin in about three weeks, while hosts can stretch it across multiple gatherings. The 2-pack and 4-pack formats are popular for stocking a tea bar.

How does this compare to a high-end loose-leaf rooibos in taste and quality?

African Autumn uses the same quality rooibos base in a convenient pyramid format. While serious connoisseurs may still prefer hand-measured loose leaf, most drinkers find the pyramid cup virtually indistinguishable and far more convenient.

Is the packaging sustainable enough for an eco-luxury buyer?

Harney & Sons is a 1% for the Planet member, and the reusable tin supports long-term pantry or display use. It's a premium purchase with an ethical sourcing story behind it.

Does the price point reflect a noticeable upgrade over supermarket brands?

Customers consistently say yes. The full-leaf pyramid sachets, smoother flavor, and decorative tin are all clear upgrades from mass-market tea bags, and the value holds up cup for cup.

I'm worried the tin will look cheap on my tea bar cart. How is it finished?

The tin has a clean, decorative finish that pairs well with curated kitchen and tea bar styling. It photographs well and looks intentional next to ceramic canisters and wooden trays.

Can I serve this to guests who only drink upscale coffee or wine?

African Autumn is a strong crossover choice because rooibos is naturally smooth, slightly sweet, and pairs well with dessert. Many non-tea drinkers genuinely enjoy it as an after-dinner option.

Is the cranberry-citrus profile subtle enough for a refined palate?

Customers describe the flavor as light, delicate, and well balanced rather than syrupy or artificial. The citrus lifts the rooibos without overpowering it, which suits a more discerning drinker.

Will this hold up against fresh-baked scones and pastries at a tea service?

Yes, rooibos has enough body to stand alongside rich baked goods without getting lost. The cranberry-citrus notes also complement buttery, nutty, or vanilla-forward desserts.

Is the aroma strong enough to be part of a luxury home ambiance?

Many customers mention enjoying the fragrance right out of the tin, which is warm, slightly fruity, and inviting. Opening the tin during tea service adds to the sensory experience of entertaining.

Does the brand heritage match the premium feel of the packaging?

Harney & Sons has a long-standing reputation in the specialty tea industry, and the African Autumn line reflects that pedigree in both sourcing and presentation. The packaging is consistent with that heritage.

Is this a sophisticated choice for someone who avoids alcohol at dinner parties?

Absolutely. Serving African Autumn in nice glassware or china gives non-drinking guests a polished, intentional option that feels just as considered as a wine pairing.

I'm hesitant to pay more for a tin vs. a bag. What's the real upgrade?

The upgrade is in three areas: the rooibos base quality, the pyramid sachet format that lets leaves bloom, and the reusable decorative tin. Together, they deliver a noticeably more refined cup and presentation.

How do I brew Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos for the best flavor?

Use one pyramid sachet per 12 oz cup of freshly boiled water (212°F) and steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Rooibos is forgiving — you can extend the steep time up to 10 minutes for a stronger, more robust cup without bitterness.

Can I brew this rooibos as iced tea or sun tea?

Yes, African Autumn works beautifully as iced tea. For sun tea, place 4 to 6 sachets in a jar of cold water and let it steep in the sun for 3 to 4 hours. For quick iced tea, brew hot, then pour over ice and add a slice of lemon.

How should I store the tin to keep the sachets fresh?

Keep the lid tightly closed between uses and store the tin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors like spices or coffee. Stored this way, the sachets stay fresh for the full 730-day shelf life.

Is this tea compatible with cream, milk, or non-dairy alternatives?

Yes, African Autumn pairs well with dairy, oat milk, almond milk, and a splash of cream. The rooibos base is robust enough to hold up to additions without losing its cranberry-citrus character.

Is African Autumn compatible with sweeteners like honey or sugar?

Yes, but most drinkers find it sweet enough on its own. If you prefer added sweetness, honey complements the rooibos base particularly well, especially when used as a sick-day or wellness tea.

What's included in the tin when I unbox it?

Each tin contains 20 pyramid sachets of Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos. Nothing else is required to brew — just hot water and a mug. The tin itself is decorative and reusable for storage or gifting.

Is this product safe for people with common dietary restrictions?

Yes, African Autumn is naturally caffeine-free, gluten-free, and Kosher certified. It contains no calories and no added sugars, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences.

How long is the shelf life, and is it safe to drink past that date?

Each tin has a 730-day (2-year) shelf life. Rooibos doesn't really 'go bad' past that date, but for the best cranberry-citrus aroma and flavor, we recommend enjoying it within the printed window.

What's the difference between rooibos tea and regular black or green tea?

Rooibos is an herbal tisane from the African red bush plant, naturally caffeine-free and very low in tannins. Black and green tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant and contain caffeine, which gives them a more astringent, sometimes bitter profile. African Autumn delivers the body of black tea with the smoothness of an herbal.
